Palms Hotel: Update from Leader of Havering Council

Published: Wednesday, 24 June 2020

The Leader of Havering Council, Councillor Damian White, provided an update today on the proposals for the Palms Hotel.

Councillor White, said:

"After we set out a series of concerns about the planned Home Office decision to use the derelict and dangerous Palms Hotel on Southend Arterial Road as dispersed accommodation for people seeking asylum, we are delighted that the decision has been overturned.

“We remain committed to ensuring the welfare of all our residents, whether temporary or long-term. The accommodation was unsuitable for vulnerable people and we are pleased that the Home Office agrees with us.

"We also remain concerned that such decisions are made without consultation with local councils and health bodies and will continue talking to the Home Office about this.”
