Safe trade scheme

The scheme is open to small business trades people who deliver services in, or to, people’s homes.

The scheme goes live in the first week of January.

The scheme is intended to support single-handed businesses, sole traders and owner-managed limited liability companies with a single employee. This might include:

  • building trades
  • domestic cleaners
  • suppliers routinely entering a home for the purpose of measuring or estimating for work
  • tutors

To take part you will be expected to be tested twice a week at one of our rapid testing sites.

If you test positive, you will receive a grant of £500, to help with ongoing business costs while you are isolating.

Testing twice weekly will not offer any guarantee that you are Covid negative, but will show your commitment that you are to doing all you can to operate safely.

If you are registered under the scheme you will also be able to claim if another member of your household is Covid positive, and so you are required to isolate.

If you provide domiciliary care and are supported separately, you cannot apply for this scheme.

Trades not permitted to continue to deliver services in their own home or in the home of their customers by national or local restrictions cannot participate.

For example hairdressers and beauticians with home studios.
