Havering has two new members of the UK Youth Parliament.
Meadow Thompson and Dominic Bacon were elected to represent the borough at a closely fought election at Havering Town Hall.
They were among six candidates from Havering Youth Council who stood for the roles after an initial 17 young people came forward to stand for the positions.
Each young person was given two minutes to speak about the issues which concerned them most before the voting took place amongst their peers.
The new members showed a passion for making an improvement in mental health in schools, opportunities in the arts and better work experience opportunities for young people generally, and for young people to be listened to.
Newly elected Member of Youth Parliament Meadow (15), said: “I can’t wait to start to make a difference across Havering. It feels unreal.”
Dominic (14) said: “I am excited and looking forward to the difference I can make.”
Both said they would now be speaking directly to other members of the Youth Council to take on board the issues that they were passionate about.
Tara Geere, Director of Children’s Services, congratulated the new members and candidates for their hard work, commitment and achievements.
Tara said: “It’s crucial that we are hearing the voices of our children and young people.
"The appointment of our new Members of Youth Parliament will give Havering’s children and young people a chance to share their views both within and beyond the borough.
“I look forward to meeting and speaking to them about the issues that concern them and supporting them on their journey through civic life.”
The new members will hold their positions for a year.
