Stories of the past brought to life in new exhibition
Published: Tuesday, 1 October 2019

Lives Remembered is a brand new exhibition telling intriguing stories about many residents who are laid to rest at Romford Cemetery.

The exhibition, which was opened by the Mayor of Havering, Cllr Michael Deon Burton, will be permanently on display in the Memorial Chapel at the Crow Lane Cemetery.

Put together by Havering Council’s Bereavement Service, it explores the lives of those behind 80 weathered headstones and bare cemetery plots

It includes police officers killed in the line of duty, firefighters who rescued munitions workers equipped only with wet clothes, whistles and string and a brewery worker knocked down by an engine buffer and carried home on the back of a door.

Some stories tell the devastating effect war had on Havering residents and what life was like as the town grew in the Victorian era and beyond.

Councillor Viddy Persaud, Havering’s Cabinet Member for Public Protection and Safety, which also includes Births, Deaths and Marriages, said:

“This is a wonderful exhibition that offers a unique insight into the lives of ordinary residents, either caught up in worldwide events that impacted on them personally or who proved to be local heroes and, there are even a few villains.

“Come and see it, it shows how residents over the last 150 years or so have played their part in the creation of Havering’s rich heritage.”

Lives Remembered, is open every day at Romford Cemetery, Crow Lane, Romford, RM7 0EP, between 9am and 3.45pm.
